This is where it all Unfolds - Gonzaga University
“Gonzaga is a university called to live and learn and teach and explore, not comfortably at the center of the culture, but at the frontiers—the cutting edge, the margins, places that require courage. What our world needs today are educated people who can, and will, transform the world.”
Thayne M. McCulloh, D.Phil.
President of Gonzaga University

This is where faith unfolds…
Gonzaga University is place where faith unfolds. It is a place to grow spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and physically. The Jesuit education prospers the whole person; in educating students for careers and a spiritual foundation to live fulfilling lives- in Christ. In referring to the first paragraph of the Gonzaga Mission statement;
“Gonzaga University is an exemplary learning community that educates students for lives of leadership and service for the common good. In keeping with its Catholic, Jesuit, and humanistic heritage and identity, Gonzaga models and expects excellence in academic and professional pursuits and intentionally develops the whole person -- intellectually, spiritually, physically, and emotionally.”
This is where purpose unfolds…
Gonzaga is a place where purpose unfolds. I chose Gonzaga University to grow in purpose, to grow in spiritual discernment, and to be reflective in thought. I see Gonzaga as a place in this world for lifelong learning. In the second paragraph of the Gonzaga Mission statement;
“Through engagement with knowledge, wisdom, and questions informed by classical and contemporary perspectives, Gonzaga cultivates in its students the capacities and dispositions for reflective and critical thought, lifelong learning, spiritual growth, ethical discernment, creativity, and innovation.”
This is where potential unfolds…
Gonzaga is place where potential expands. I chose Gonzaga to expand my knowledge in diversity, intercultural relations, and to be involved in serving. The Gonzaga community does not begin and end in Spokane-it is global. In the third paragraph of the Gonzaga Mission statement;
“The Gonzaga experience fosters a mature commitment to dignity of the human person, social justice, diversity, intercultural competence, global engagement, solidarity with the poor and vulnerable, and care for the planet. Grateful to God, the Gonzaga community carries out this mission with responsible stewardship of our physical, financial, and human resources.”

This is where community unfolds…
"In recent years, Gonzaga has begun talking more publicly and intentionally about its essential mission. Rooted in a centuries-old Jesuit educational tradition, we seek to prepare generations of faith-filled and ethical leaders whose actions reflect a commitment to service, justice, and promotion of the common good. Our commitment begins right here, in the local community of which we have always been a part. We look forward to creating the next 125 years—together" (Thayne M. McCulloh, Ph.D. President).

In recent years, I have been serving in the Kansas City community to do the work Christ has guided me to do. In keeping with the Jesuit Tradition serving is part of everyday life. A life fulfilled with meaning by serving others in need and out of love. Gonzaga’s Center for Community Action and Service –Learning (CCASL) and the Center for Global Engagement combine public service and global connections:
“Service to others and engagement with our community is a critical piece of the Gonzaga University experience. Since the mid-1990s, the Center for Community Action and Service-Learning (CCASL) at Gonzaga University has empowered students to take action through community involvement, education and public service. The center coordinates service-learning courses, manages community-based volunteer and outreach programs, and provides referrals to external volunteer opportunities. These programs provide our students an opportunity to serve their local and global communities, develop leadership skills, and engage in the Jesuit practice of reflection to learn and grow from these experiences.”

Our immersions group focused our residency project on Gonzaga's global connections. Here is a little about the Center for Global Engagement, “The Center for Global Engagement will advance Gonzaga University as a national leader in developing innovative programming that teaches the skills, attitudes and knowledge necessary for our graduates to become reflective and ethical leaders in our increasingly interconnected world. Our vision is of Gonzaga students, alumni, faculty and staff engaged with students and scholars from around the world in intellectually stimulating educational experiences that build intercultural skills, and foster dialogue, mutual understanding, and peace.” During our residency project, we interviewed several students about the Center for Global Engagement. Each one of them mentioned the positive impact Gonzaga has on their lives, as foreign students, and as American students studying abroad.

I am unfolding with faith, purpose, potential, and service. A Zag for life, is my new creed, and I take the Zag “modus operandi” to heart. I am proud to be associated with a fine institution, a faith based institution, and to adhere to a constant theme;
“A constant throughout the years is Gonzaga’s educational philosophy, based on the centuries-old Ignatian model of educating the whole person–mind, body and spirit. At Gonzaga, students discover how to integrate science and art, faith and reason, action and contemplation. "Cura personalis," or care for the individual, is our guiding theme.”
